I have got some learnings about British people in the three months in UK.
The way of the British's life left a deep impression on me. I will go into the
food, clothing, shelter and transportation as follows:
Firstly, clothes.
The British young people prefer the fashionable clothes. They like to wear
the newest fashion in a bold way, and they also like to make up and wear body
ornaments. And tattoo is very popular with the young people. While the elder people
tend to be more traditional. They would like to be dressed very formally and neatly.
What impressed me most is the school uniform. All the uniforms for each school
are mainly designed as black suit, striped tie, garment sweater and short skirt
for girls. Whether girls or boys, when they are wearing the school uniforms, everyone
looks neat, formal, cheerful but modern. But the fact that the skirt is too short
for the girls many not be accepted by Chinese people.
Secondly, food.
The British people, in my opinion, are not so concerned about their lunch
during the working days. But some families will make the Sunday lunch on weekend.
It is a formal meal. It's main dish is usually chicken or beef or lamb, toasted
potato , accompanied by carrots and some vegetables. After meals, they usually
have desserts, such as puddings, crumbles, cornflakes , cakes, or icecream . After
the main course, usually , the dishes need to be put away at once. Then the table
will be laid again for the dessert course.
Thirdly, shelter.
The kinds of the houses that English people live in are as follows: terraced
house, bunglar, detached house , castle. The English people seed after their own
houses. They keep changing their own houses, from small to large. They prefer
to be proud of their own garden and like to show off their own garden. Generally,
the kitchen is the most important place for them. Some hosts wouldn't allow other
people to enter their kitchen. There are many cookers of different kinds in the
kitchen.
Fourthly, transportation.
Almost every family in UK has cars. The building workers drive to work for
other people. It is not so expensive to buy a car in UK, but it is very hard to
keep it, because the petrol is very expensive in UK and they have to pay high
tax. For example, a full tank of petrol costs about 50 pounds with about 37 pounds
for tax. The items with a very high tax are : cigarette, alcohol, and petrol.
The buses usually are exactly on time. During the stay in UK for three months
, I took a bus to school everyday. The bus was late by 5 minutes only once owing
to the road repairs. The roads of the cities in UK are not so wide and there are
so many private cars in UK, but traffic jams are seldom seen. That's because people
mostly are polite. At the traffic light, people will automatically stop even without
anyone there.
The drivers of the bus are very friendly. Whenever the disabled people get
on the bus, the driver will lay down the stairs and get down the bus to help them
to get on . They will usually do the same when they are getting off the bus. The
passengers will say hello to the driver when getting on and say goodbye to him
or her when getting off, including the students and the pupils.
Fifthly, working.
British people work from Monday to Friday. They won't work at the weekends.
If they need to work at the weekends, they will be paid double. British people
mostly are spiritual and energetic when working. After work, they like to go to
pubs to drink beer. They usually have a vacation of several weeks. They like to
go out traveling to spend their vacation.
At last, education.
The pupils and the students go to school from 9 Am to3 PM. After class, they
have a lot of activities, such as singing and dancing , sports, camping. They
can develop their own ability according to their own interests. Therefore, the
children are usually creative and bold and active in taking part in different
kinds of activities. The children have a good sense of music.
