Dear Chinese teacher(s),
Would you like to get on well with your host family ? Here are some suggestions
of “Life with an English family”. I hope you enjoy reading them.
When you have a conversation with your host family, using polite greetings
A LOT is advisable, e.g. “Please ” , “Hello” , “Good morning / night” , “Sorry”
. “Have a nice day ”. Please remember “The more you ask , the more you’ll get
” , so don’t feel embarrassed about asking for something . However , try to contribute
to humor with your host that can help you to be more friendly to each other .
You know , when in Rome do as the Romans do . Before you do anything , you’d
better ask permission even if it’s the second or third time you’re doing it ,
e.g. watching videos on THEIR machine , eating fruit… . Smoking is less acceptable
than in China . At weekends or during holidays , it’s advisable to get out and
visit places , and try to talk with other British people so that you can not only
to improve your English , but also to absorb more culture abroad . Get out of
the way when your host mother and host father argue . In China people like to
visit each other . Yet in England something is different . It’s polite to make
arrangement before dropping in to see friends in other host families . What’s
more , it’s a good habit to have your timekeeping .
I think you’re interested in eating . Eating by yourself is not considered
strange even if it might feel a bit add to you . Speaking with your mouth full
is impolite . You would be advised to keep your voice down while eating as well
. The host family would be grateful if you offer to wash the dishes after eating
, but do remember to be economical with the hot water . I’d like to tell you that
GOING DUTCH is the accepted way of payment when you go out to eat with the family.
By the way , it’s a good idea to take a plug or adaptor suited to the British
system if you need to charge battery . Always bear in mind “When in Rome ”. I’m
sure you will have an enjoyable stay with your English family .
With best wishes to you !
Yours ,
Shirley (何淑玲)
